چکیده

High-definition patterns were observed under 10-Hz-pulse-repetition-rate, nanosecond laser irradiation of azodye-doped planar-nematic liquid crystal layers at incident intensities I 5–10 MW=cm in a single beam configuration and without any feedback involved. An incident polarization parallel to the nematic director was used. Under periodic pulsed laser irradiation, far-field beam patterns at the output of a dye-doped liquid crystal layer changed kaleidoscopically from rings and stripes to multiple hexagons. This pattern-formation regime had a buildup time of several seconds to minutes. We explain the observed effect by diffraction of the laser beam on light-induced micrometer-size inhomogeneities inside the liquid crystal layer with absorption and refraction properties different from the surrounding area. Possible mechanisms of the formation of the inhomogeneities are discussed.

Cumulative Birefringence Effects of Nanosecond Laser Pulses in Dye-doped Planar Nematic Liquid Crystal Layers

New cumulative effects in laser-induced birefringence have been observed under 10Hz-pulse-repetition-rate, nanosecond-duration laser irradiation of azo-dye-doped planarnematic liquid crystal layers at incident intensities I ∼ 1–10 MW/cm2. An irradiation geometry with the incident polarization parallel to the nematic director was used. This geometry does not permit a first-order electric field i...

Photo-orientation of liquid crystals due to light-induced desorption and adsorption of dye molecules on an aligning surface.

We show that adsorption of dye molecules control the light-induced alignment of dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (LC) on a nonphotosensitive polymer surface. The dependencies of light-induced twist structures on exposure, thermal baking, thickness, and aging before irradiation of the LC cells allowed us to propose the following mechanism for the alignment. Before irradiation, the "dark"-adsorbe...

Study on the Polarization of Random Lasers from Dye-Doped Nematic Liquid Crystals

Random lasers from dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (DDNLC) cells with different rubbing methods were observed due to different random ring cavities that were formed. Through constructing cells with different rubbing methods on the forward and backward surfaces of light-emitting sides, we can get two random laser beams with different polarization directions from one DDNLC cell at the same time,...

Conoscopic analysis of electric field driven planar aligned nematic liquid crystal.

This paper illustrates the conoscopic observation of a molecular reconstruction occurring across a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) medium in the presence of an external electric field. Conoscopy is an optical interferometric method, employed to determine the orientation of an optic axis in uniaxial crystals. Here a planar aligned NLC medium is used, and the topological changes with respect to vari...

Nonlinear optical transmission of lead phthalocyanine-doped nematic liquid crystal composites for multiscale nonlinear switching from nanosecond to continuous wave.

We have formulated composites of lead (II) tetrakis (4-cumylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (PbTCPc) doped into nematic liquid crystal (LC), 4(')-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5-CB), that has received a 90 degree twisted alignment and investigated the nonlinear transmission properties using both pulsed (Nd:YLF 524 nm, 5 ns) and cw (532 nm) lasers. In the nanosecond regime, this compound is a reverse s...
